UMOJA is active in the community,
providing services that enhance, engage and educate youth and adults. The
programs and services that UMOJA provides (1)
African Heritage School Initiative (AHSI): educational program that
presents cultural diversity in the form of African dance, African
drumming, and interactive workshops for K-12 students; (2) African
Heritage Early Education (AHEEI): program directly responds to studies
that have established the importance of structured music and motion in
early childhood development to enhance brain development and increase
abstract reasoning skills necessary for future comprehension. The
AHEEI program provides a challenging curriculum that utilizes African
art so that pre-K children can: develop and enhance conceptual
learning, acquire basic skills, and participate in meaningful, relevant
and interesting learning; (3) UMOJA, Jr.: master classes provided to
6-12 year olds to develop and perfect the skill of African dance and
African drumming for the purpose of public performance; (4) Spirit of
the Drum: drumming workshops for children and adults with special needs
and others that may benefit from the healing and unifying energy that
is emanated from the physical effort and concentration involved with
African drumming; (5) UJIMA; a social entrepreneurial program created
to teach African dance, drumming and craftsmanship skills to men and
women and (6) Presentations: UMOJA provides presentations for community
and private events, presentations include performances, workshops and
lectures in African culture and heritage.
